ok mark a couple a questions. 1. does it just click when turning it over 2. or does the starter turn slow?
prob 1. if it clicks it is most likely the solenoid. prob 2. if it hits right away and turns over slow then it is three things a. bad connection at the battery b. bad battery c. not charging correctly

if the battery sits for a day or two, there's NOTHING. no click, no nothing. The guages move when I turn the key, but nothing else happens.
If I put a charge on it, it fires up every time. If the battery is fully charged, it fires up every time.
The battery is brand new, but I guess I could have it tested anyway.

the thing that confuses me is
1. no click 2. that putting a charge on it solves the problem. It's not like I have to charge it for an hour, as soon as I attach the charger, I can start the car

you have a bad connection at the battery or the battery is bad.

Also about that makita buffer, it's probably the wires where they go into the machine. It has a clamp that holds them to the body inside and it's notorious for eventually pinching the wires in half, but not pinching through the insulation. You have to cut off the wires before the clamp and rewire it. should solve your problem. it did it to our buffers about every 6 months lol.

I'll take apart the connections at the battery and look for corrosion
If that doesn't solve it I'll have the battery checked.

Do I have to cut the rubber boot that is at the base of the handle?

got the starting problem fixed. It was the solenoid, kind of. on screw holding the solenoid on was missing, and the other one was about one turn from falling out. It had something to do with the connection of the small post, which is why I wasn't getting a click. The only reason I know that is because the replacement starter I got had two small posts instead of one, and I hooked up the ground to the wrong post, and it did the exact same thing until I switched it. That would not have been fun if that had come apart on my while I was on the road, anywhere.... I'll put the old starter aside as a backup, after I screw it all back together

The boot slides up and down the cord. Glad you got the starter fixed before the drive!

58mark, seeing that starter pick made me quiver with the memory of removing mine. I had to take the stupid starter apart, while still up in the car, and take it out in pieces just to be able to remove it out from the exhaust. Replaced it with a mini starter. Yesterday I washed, waxed, and detailed the interior/engine bay. I also claybared the rear glass, it was looking poor. By the time I got to the interior and the engine bay it was stinkin hot! The sun was bearing down on me so I did a poor job on the engine and interior, but its clean anyway.

I"m really glad I tackled it before the roundup. the one I took out looked like a cheap rebuild, and I replaced it with the top reman from napa. Hopefully I'll get years of service out of it, and when it dies, I can turn it in and get another. I love lifetime warranties!
